Adjusting Your Turntable's Tonearm

At Vinylacy, we understand the importance of properly setting up your turntable for the best listening experience. Here’s a detailed guide to help you correctly adjust your turntable’s tonearm.

Many owners are unaware of this essential procedure, but we're here to help.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Leveling the Turntable

  • Ensure Level Surface: Make sure your turntable is perfectly horizontal. Use a bubble level or a leveling app to check this. Adjust the feet of the turntable if necessary to achieve a level surface.

Step 2: Balancing the Tonearm

  • Remove the Stylus Guard: Carefully take off the stylus guard to avoid any damage to the stylus.

  • Adjust the Counterweight: Turn the counterweight at the back of the tonearm until the tonearm is perfectly balanced, floating horizontally parallel to the platter. This ensures that the tonearm is neither too heavy nor too light.

Step 3: Setting the Counterweight and Tracking Force

  • Reference Cartridge Specifications: Check the specifications of your cartridge to determine the appropriate tracking force.

  • Zero the Scale Ring: With the tonearm balanced, turn the numbered tracking force dial (usually on the counterweight) to align the 0 with the center line or marker on the tonearm without moving the counterweight itself.

  • Adjust the Tracking Force: Rotate the entire counterweight to the specified tracking force as per your cartridge’s requirements. This ensures the stylus applies the correct pressure on the record for optimal playback.

Following these steps will help ensure that your turntable is set up correctly, providing the best possible sound quality and prolonging the life of your vinyl records and stylus. Enjoy your listening experience with confidence!
